Abstract

If you think innovation comes primarily from the business world...If you think city making can only be done by public administrations...If you think sustainability is for tree huggers...Think again. The future is the result of what we all create together. Change makers are the innovators of our time. Change the World City by City shines a light on their work by focusing on transition initiatives in five European cities. These initiatives aim to make the world a better place by changing the way we think, act and co-operate.At first glance, their transformative capacity might be tiny in a world dominated by large-scale corporations and powerful vested interests. Yet when you dive deeper, you will discover that making the future happens organically, everywhere, all the time, that urban innovation does not thrive on competition but on collaboration and that the work to make this world a better place starts with ourselves and not with others.Bron: https://www.lannoocampus.be/nl/change-world-city-city

Abstract

The current ecological crisis will transform the face and fate of cities. Neighbourhoods for the Future is based on the conviction that we should rethink cities from the ambit of the neighbourhood. It revisits the neighbourhood as the designated scale and arena to build our urban futures. The neighbourhood is small enough to be tangible, yet big enough to make a difference. In order for neighbourhoods to really work, residents need to be engaged and the tactics should be embedded within a wider social policy, if we want thriving cities. By introducing the concepts of neighbourhood arrangements and ecologies, based on examples in Europe and North America, this book provides a new perspective on the relation between participants, resources, and rules, to spark change and prepare urbanites and policymakers for realizing their own sustainable neighbourhoods for the future.

Abstract

Abstract

This book, the first in a planned series, reports on the 'Future Cities Laboratory' and its ambitious mission to shape sustainable future cities through science, by design, in place. It offers a global perspective on cities from the vantage point of Asia, where the laboratory is based. This view has particular significance today as the fortunes of Asia, the world's most populous and rapidly urbanizing continent, will also delineate the prospects of the planet.

Abstract

Modern architecture is inseparably linked with the Industrial Revolution. Industrially manufactured materials such as iron, steel, reinforced concrete, glass, asbestos, and later also plastics, have helped to make architecture modern. The Industrial Revolution also set planetary warming in motion. Thus, it is not far-fetched to claim that there are also correlations between modern architecture and planetary warming. This book is a rough sketch of a proposed history of modern architecture since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. It aims to break away from the established neural networks of the profession’s collective memory of how modern architecture’s history has unfolded, and offers the beginning of a rewiring: by introducing new actors, and highlighting ideas and projects that deal with climate and environment, while relegating some of the usual stars of modernism and postmodernism to the background.

Abstract

Life in the city is popular and creating liveable urban space is undoubtedly a priority for planners. Yet what makes a city worth living in? How do we define sustainable neighbourhoods that will function properly and continue to attract people in the future? What does "Smart City" or "resilience" really mean? The completely revised, new edition of this publication provides the answers. It addresses the fundamental challenges of urban planning today and offers planners essential knowledge, implementation strategies and ways toward holistic concept development. Examples of international neighbourhood developments clearly show how aspects of sustainable urban planning can be implemented in practice.

Abstract

This third and final volume in the Indicia book series presents the results of the Future Cities Laboratory research program in the form of actions for sustainable city-making. It complements the first and second volumes of the series that respectively documented the research challenges and approaches that prefigured these results. Read together, the three volumes chart the full arc and many productive eddies of the five-year program and its mission to shape sustainable future cities. Research results are presented as condensed actions that take the form of general principles, recommendations and practical guidelines. The actions are neither technical standards nor prescriptive checklists but invitations to explore, test and refine research insights within the context in which the reader lives, works and acts. The credibility, salience and legitimacy of each action is underpinned by scientific publications (journal articles, books and exhibitions) presented in extensive footnotes and suggestions for further reading.

Abstract

How can integral circular solutions contribute to the realisation of added value in the neighbourhood? This book provides insight into how citizens can play an active and effective role in the transitions to a circular and sustainable society. Inspiring for citizens who want to develop their own initiatives to make their living environment more sustainable. In Circular Communities, pioneering, collectively supported initiatives are central, aimed at closing resource flows at neighbourhood or district level and thus contributing to the transition to a circular economy. For the analysis of these different initiatives, the researchers - urban planner Els Leclercq and architect Mo Smit - developed a unique method: the Circular Value Flower method. This method helps to organise the joint closing of resource flows (materials, energy, water, biota, nutrients) on a neighbourhood scale and provides insight into the added value (economic, ecological, social, cultural, aesthetic) that can be realised within the built environment. Circular Communities thus offers inspiration and lessons for integral sustainable interventions at the scale of the neighbourhood and ties in with the new Environmental Planning Act (2022), which explicitly offers space for citizen initiatives and local commissioning.

Abstract

This edition of the book 'Urban green-blue grids for sustainable and dynamic cities' is a revised and updated reprint of the handbook by Hiltrud Pötz en Pierre Bleuzé.'Urban green-blue grids for sustainable and dynamic cities' is a visionary, practical and inspiring book for education and practice. Useful for developers, urban planners, landscape architects, ecologists, civil engineers and all those interested in making cities more sustainable and liveable.Half of the earths’ inhabitants live in cities, and urbanisation is only increasing. The quality of our future thus depends on the quality of our cities. Our challenge is to keep our cities and our planet liveable, safe, healthy and attractive throughout this century. Due to climate change, increasing urbanisation and the depletion of fossil fuels, cities will need to undergo a more or less gradual transition from being primarily consumers of food toward producing their own.One attractive and efficient way to guide this necessary transformation is by developing green-blue urban grids that will mitigate the effects of climate change and the energy and food shortages in urban areas. Our cities need to become more resilient to be able to tackle these challenges, as a lack of resilience will not only lead to a deficiency in technical infrastructural functioning but will also have consequences for a city’s social and economic well-being.Furthermore, green-blue urban planning will offer more room for the development of biodiversity and a healthier, more attractive living environment. This book shows the principles of sustainable urban planning and many substantial measures. About forty realized and international example projects in green-blue and sustainable urban planning demonstrate the feasibility of the principles and measures.
